The story of Dejen

I want to tell you a story which is not in itself a good story, as all stories about illness are never good, but a story that ended well.

Dejen is a child living in Adigrat, in a very poor village located in the north of Ethiopia. He had the adversity to be born with a genetic disease. This disease is very frequent in Italy (it affects 1 person in 500) but it is a very rare disease in Ethiopia.

All these years I observed very few people affected by this type of disease, but I had never seen in my life such a serious case. We met Dejen when he was 4 years old, he started getting chest pain, sometimes he fainted while running: it was a severe “Ostructive Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy”.

This kind of disease causes an increasing volume of the heart. When it becomes very big, the blood flow emission is obstructed in each heartbeat. We provided Dejen with specific medical treatment brought from Italy, but his situation was so severe that despite an illusory positive reaction, he continued to have relevant symptoms, even in a more serious forms.

So we contacted the most known cardiac surgeon, prof. Magid Jacoub, an Egyptian cardiac surgeon operating at the Aswan Heart Centre in Egypt. After two years of negotiations on how to proceed, we finally arranged the trip of Dejen to Aswan. He traveled with his father and Milena healthcare assistant Shishay.

Dejen was finally operated and all went for the best[/vc_column_text]

So this the miracle of life, the concrete commitment of what we can do for ill people who need help.

Looking at Dejen´s smile all the challenges faced vanish instantly and the lights of hope illuminate the future.
