Prevention Programme for Rheumatic Disease

In March 2016 Milena NPO organized a cardiology screening mission at the elementary and middle school of Wukro (50 kms from Makalle) attended by more than 3.000 kids.

During the mission, 257 children underwent a paediatric and cardiology visit, throat swab with immediate response and echocardiogram examination.

The outcome brought to evidence that 30 of the children examined suffered from streptococcal infection and it was identified an initial phase of the rheumatic disease.

In order to prevent the progressive evolution of the disease, all 30 children were treated with fast acting antibiotic followed by prophylaxis with a 5-year program of benzathin penicillin.
